SOUND STYLES CELEBRATES: 20 YEARS!
Fall 2005 marks Sound Style's 20th Anniversary—20 years of being committed to helping women look and feel great. We're in the mood to celebrate and you're invited!

So, be sure to mark your calendar to attend the festivities being held at Sound Styles, Thursday through Sunday, October 6, 7, 8 and 9! We have a variety of fun events planned for you, including all of our "favorite things-to-do" that many of you have enjoyed with us in our past celebrations. We hope you'll come back for more. Here's a preview of what we'll be doing:

Thursday evening, 5:00 pm-8:00 pm, October 6: We'll be kicking off our celebrations with a 20%-Off-Everything-In-The-Store-Sale! All the while, you'll be serenaded by our favorite musician, Enrique, with his masterful guitar playing ... and you can be soothed with a complimentary seated massage by Molly Boyce. Of course, there will be plenty of goodies to eat that evening, too.

Friday afternoon, 3:00 pm-5:00 pm, October 7: Audrey Daniels, internationally known bead artist, will share a collection of her latest beaded jewelry designs, all available for purchase. You'll also see informal modeling that shows you fashion ideas for comfort and travel. Plus we'll be serving delicious chocolates. What better way to windup the week?

Saturday morning, 8:00 am-9:30 am, October 8: Get out your walking shoes! Sound Styles will host a three-mile charity walk for TeenHope, the homeless shelter for teens located in Shoreline. The walk will originate at Sound Styles and then follows the new foot path along Edmonds' own waterfront. Register your place in this walk at Sound Styles. The fee is $20 and registration closes on September 30. Hurry in to be among the first 100 registrants, and you will receive a ÒWalkÓ t-shirt and a water bottleÑfree!

Saturday morning and afternoon, 10:00 am-2:00 pm, October 8: Drop in the store during this part of our celebration and you will be treated to a fabulous trunk show by Kristen Dekker of So Beadiful. Her handmade bracelets featuring "name," "birthstone" and "stone" stories are unique pieces—wonderful to give as gifts or keep for yourself. Kristen will be taking special orders for your custom choices. Coming to us all the way from Green Bay, Wisconsin, Kristen's trunk show is a must see!

Thank-you for 20 great years! We sincerely hope you can join us in our celebrations.

CALENDARS FOR SALE
The "Women of Edmonds" 2006 calendars are now for sale at Sound Styles. In support of Trinity Place, the YWCA's newest transitional housing complex for homless women and their children in Snohomish County, 14 Edmonds women business owners came together to create the calendar as a fund raiser. Trinity Place is a great example of the many business, civic and non-profit groups coming together to make a difference in our community. Get your copy today for $10 and you, too, can help support the cause.

SOUND STYLES GOURMET

This is the first recipe that was offered by the Sound Styles Gourmet, appearing in our first issue of SOUNDINGS back in 1988. Twenty years later, it's still one of our favorites!

Norwegian Kringler

1. Mix like pie crust: 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup butter and 1 tbsp water. Pat on cookie sheet until 1/4" thick.

2. Put in saucepan: 1 cup water and 1/2 cup butter. Heat to boiling. As you take from heat, add 1 cup flour. Stir until smooth. Beat in, one at a time, 3 eggs. Add 1/2 tsp almond flavoring. Spread on part #1 pie crust mix. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes.

3. Frosting mix: 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tbsp cream, 1 tbsp butter, 1/2 tsp almond flavoring. Stir until smooth and spread on warm pastry. Enjoy!

"OFF THE CUFF"
By Jenny Murphy
by Jenny Murphy Planning our 20th anniversary celebration here at Sound Styles has caused me to reminisce and reflect on change and just how much of it has taken place since we opened our doors in 1985, and I find it mind boggling. One would think that working in the clothing industry, an industry that not only embraces change but seeks it out, I'd be used to it. But I'm not finding that to be true right now and I think it has something to do with putting it in terms of 20 years.

I remember two precious little girls, six and nine, in the late 80s. They would come into our store to buy presents for their single mom who frequently shopped with us. I would help them select something "in their price range," wrap it up for them, take their $14.86 and send them happily on their way. It was such fun! Now these two "little girls" are full grown women with children of their own. Certainly it was just yesterday. How can they change that much in twenty years when I haven't?

And think of all the fashion trends we've seen come and go in twenty years. Remember stirrup pants? The first woman to try them on in our dressing room gasped so audibly that I quickly ran to tell her through the curtain to "put the long sweater on." Then there was the time when skirts got so long that we wondered what our shorter gals would wear. Now, several years later, it's midi and right below the knee lengths that are in. Capris were another "oh, really?", but what is everybody wearing now? Aha!

Certainly, change and its effects can be seen very clearly in a clothing store. Attitudes towards it are revealed in "dressing room" conversation as women age and face their own bodies while discovering new fashions. (I happen to find the attitudes just as interesting as the fashions). And since change is a given, it helps me to think of it in terms of "Mental Shifting." New ideas replace the old and we move on. After all, all fashion really does is go "up and down," "in and out," and "big and small." It's this 20 year thing. Where did it all go? That's what boggles me. Maybe I just need fresh "neural transmission fluid." That's sure to help my shifting. At least the mental kind!
